How Much Will It Cost to Move to Hawaii?

Moving to any new state can be expensive, but relocating to Hawaii carries its unique expenditures as it is analogous to moving overseas. Consequently, you will experience a variety of costs people do not usually experience when moving from one state to another.

1. Airfare

Depending on where you live, plane travel can be either very cheap or very expensive. However, you should expect to spend between $300 and $1,000 per ticket. Of course, as with any travel, how much you pay will vary according to the time of year.

For instance, flying to Hawaii will typically be the most expensive from mid-December through mid-April. Similarly, weekend travel will be more expensive than weekday travel. In fact, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are often the cheapest days to travel.

Depending on where you currently live, you may have to fork over a small fortune on airfare just to get to the islands.

2. Shipping your vehicle

The fees you will incur when shipping your vehicle are primarily determined by the vehicle’s weight and size. That said, shipping a car typically costs between $1,000 and $1,500 per car. Also, it is important to understand that shipping your vehicle is very different than shipping belongings. This means you will need to make separate arrangements for shipping your vehicle and shipping your belongings.

Additionally, you might be able to save yourself a bit of cash if you drop your vehicle off at the shipping port. Finally, be sure to empty your car beforehand as it will be checked before it is accepted.

3. Moving your belongings

The cost to ship your belongings is typically based on how much they weigh or the dimensions of your shipment, meaning how much space everything will require. For instance, if you will be moving a three-bedroom home, you can expect to spend an average of $5,000 to $10,000. This wide variation in price takes into consideration whether you will be moving large, bulky items or smaller, lightweight items.

4. Pets

If you have a dog or a cat, you will need to prepare to move your pet. These preparations take time, and the costs associated with each type of preparation will vary.

Rabies shots

Your pet will need to be brought current on his or her rabies shots. These shots are routine, and you are likely already aware of how much your vet charges. That said, if you have a new pet, you should budget approximately $50 for the office visit and roughly $30 to $65 for the shots.

Microchip

Hawaii requires pets to have microchips. These consist of a small transmitter that is injected beneath your pet’s skin. The microchip will help track the pet if it ever gets loose or stolen. Fees associated with microchips can vary, but you can expect to spend between $40 and $45.

Air travel

Traveling with a pet is not terribly expensive. You can move your pet across the ocean for as little as $200. The bad news is that different airlines charge different amounts, and the upper end of such fees might reach a whopping $1,000. Consequently, you need to select your airline based on your ticket price and your pet’s cargo price.
